A bit of history

Passchendaele was selected by Ken's grandfather, Arthur Mervyn Bassingthwaighte.

After Mervyn returned from World War 1 he was keen to remember his fallen comrades, so he named his property after the battle of Passchendaele in Belguim in which he fought.

The property has been owned and operated by the same family since 1921.

The present

The property's now run by his grandson Ken and his wife Carolyn.

Ken's lived all of his life on the property except for brief periods away for schooling.

Carolyn's a farmer's daughter from nearby Jandowae and has lived most of her life in the area.

Carolyn is involved with many community organisations and helps, with Ken, to organise the Burrandowan Picnic Races - one of the biggest events on the region's social calendar.

Carolyn's a keen gardener and as well as the sprawling country garden, there's now a vineyard adjacent to the cottage .

Ken says "I like to think people can learn something from us and about our way of life in the country."
