Newly opened in December of 2004, Earl’s Anchorage, Lord Howe Island’s premier accommodation, was constructed to embrace sound ecological design, make a contribution to the built form on the Island, and create an interesting and memorable stay on what is often labelled the “Last Paradise”.
Each generously sized bungalow is different, some more noticeably than others. Different roof shapes, window placement and proportions have been used to create interesting spaces. Every Living/Dining/ Kitchen has a northern aspect to maximise winter warmth, with direct access to a northern outside deck area. Each Living/Dining room has a unique ceiling shape from sweeping vaults to pitched, and the buildings have been carefully positioned to be separate and achieve a pleasant private outlook, while maintaining a connected nautical village feel.
Earl’s Anchorage is named in honour of renowned Australian yachtsman, adventurer and marine artist, the late Jack Earl. Jack was a founding member of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and was a co-founder of the now internationally famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Jack is probably best known for his 1947/48 circumnavigation of the world in the "Kathleen Gillett”, the second Australian yacht to circumnavigate the globe; and later in life, his stunning nautical artworks. Each bungalow is named after one of Jack’s famous yachts.
Earls Anchorage offers luxuries unseen in other island accommodation, including generously proportioned one and two bedroom freestanding private bungalows, reverse cycle split system air-conditioning, Austar satellite TV, DVD and sound system, private laundry facilities, quality hand crafted timber furniture, laid timber flooring, granite bench-tops, private balconies, spa baths in some bungalows, dedicated phone lines, fully self contained kitchens, comprehensive mini-bar, and private barbeque areas. Daily housekeeping service is standard and one bungalow has disabled facilities. We also promote a smoke free environment.
Earl’s Anchorage is among the native Kentia palms on a five acre estate, centrally located, giving easy access to beaches, and is within easy reach of the shops and restaurants. We provide quality geared pushbikes for hire, plus run a mini-bus service to restaurants each evening.
